YOUR SKILLS
We believe that being the parents of a child with
special needs means learning to accept your child’s
constraints as well as being aware of his or her
potentials.
L’abilità - Strategies on early childhood
disabilities - is an organisation active in Milano since
1998. Within its scope of action is the provision of
well-being to children with special needs as well as
offering a realiable support to parents while promoting
a greater awareness on the rights of children with
special needs.
It is a non-profit organisation networked to social and
health services, schools, public entities as well as
private groups.
Children up to the age of ten who are members of "L’Abilità" and referred to us by health centers and/or
organisations can enjoy educational and recreational
activities.
Parents can attend courses and seminars and printed
material is also available to all.
The name of our organisation - L'abilità - comes from a
pun: l'abilità ('the ability') and labilità ('dis-ability').
Frailness and skills are indeed the two concepts that
have inspired us in finding such a name for our
organisation. Frailness is meant to be a word
descriptive of both the child with special needs and his/her
family’s situation: physical and psychological
instability, the need for points of reference and
support as well as a frail and easily influenced
emotional state.
Skills means the end-point of a tough and yet walkable
path: the child and parental skills in finding together
a way of getting beyond the definition of "who or what
is normal" and yet aiming at becoming independent. |
